Agency
Background
The South East Bronx Neighborhood Centers (SEBNC), is
a not-for-profit multi-service agency, with strong community roots that
has been serving the Morrisania area of the Bronx since 1929.
SEBNC evolved from Council House, a project of the National
Council of Jewish Women (NCWJ) in the 1930's. During the early 1940's
the population in the Southeast Bronx shifted dramatically to a predominantly
African America constituency. At that juncture the NCJW invited a group
of leaders to assume responsibility for what was then called Forest Neighborhood
House. In March of 1971, the Forest Neighborhood House Board of Directors
reorganized and reincorporated as South East Bronx Neighborhood Centers.
Since that time, the agency has retained the original
focus and has shaped a program of service that focuses on youth, children,
seniors and families using education, counseling, training, recreation,
and day treatment as primary service delivery strategies.
