MINDS UNLIMITED AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAM

What is MINDS UNLIMITED? A year-round educational program which provides academic, physical and emotional support. The program’s goal is to enlighten and enhance participant’s education, through academic enrichment, recreational and cultural activities.

Who are Program Participants? Adolescents, 6-12 years old.

When is the Program Held?
September – June
Monday – Friday 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Summer (July and August)
Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What do Participants Receive?
Homework Assistance; Partners in Reading (literacy skills through Journal Writing, along with arts-n-crafts); Computer access to help increase literacy and to do independent studies; Community field trips (library, local police precincts and recreational outings). Recreational activities (basketball, kickball, and volleyball).

Special Program Components:

• Partners in Reading
• Computer Lab Access and Support
• Seasonal Events
• Monthly Parents Participation
• Light dinner served (except in the summer)
• End of the Year Award Ceremony

NYC DEPT. OF YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (DYCD)/
EDUCATION SUPPORT, TRUANCY AND DROP-OUT PREVENTION PROGRAM

What is the Prevention Program? A 12-month afterschool and summer program which provides educational, recreational and counseling support to prevent truancy and/or dropping out of school.

Who are Program Participants? Adolescents and teens (10-14 years old) who are “at-risk” of dropping out of school and need support due to environmental, economic and/or personal circumstances.

When is the Program Held? Monday -- Friday 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday (for trips)

What do Participants Receive? Case Management; Individual Counseling Tutoring Services; Career Development; and Recreational Activities.

Special Program Components:

• “Wednesday Workshops” of age-appropriate topics.
• Summer Club of recreational activities
• Computer Lab Access and Support
• Community Service Projects
• End of Program Year Awards Ceremony

JOBS FOR YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

What is the Jobs For Youth Apprenticeship Program? A two-year program which explores career and employment opportunities in traditional and non-traditional occupations. Classroom sessions are held at 576A East 165th Street (between Boston Road and Trinity Avenue) in the Bronx.

Who are Program Participants? In-School (11th and 12th grade at-risk students) and out of school young adults (17-21 years old). Out-of-school participants must have at least an 8th grade reading and math level. Emphasis and preferences are given to jobs eligible youth identified through the local Department of Social Services, NY State Department of Labor’s Service Delivery Area (SDA), local community-based organizations which operate youth programs, and the local school board. Special consideration is given to custodial youth parents.

Monday – Friday Monday – Friday
3 p.m. – 5 p.m. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What do Participants Receive? Job Readiness Training; Counseling and Placement Services which help participants acquire marketable skills, understand common business practices and increase their self-confidence. Participants also receive academic assistance.

• Combination of academics and work-based learning; Employment via apprenticeships;


• Emphasis on achieving a high school diploma Enhancement of basic skills towards GED;

YOUTH ACTIVITY AND NIGHT CENTER

What is the Youth Activity and Night Center? A year-round evening/ weekend recreational and educational center for youth, adults and seniors. Program is held at SEBNC’s headquarters located in the NYC Housing Authority’s Forest Houses Residential Complex.

Who are Program Participants? Youth, adults and seniors 6 years - 70 years old.

When is the Program Held?
October – April May – September

Monday – Friday: 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. Monday – Friday: 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Saturday 2 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Sunday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

LEISURE TIME I & II AND LEISURELY YOURS RECREATION PROGRAMS

What is Leisure Time? Three therapeutic recreation programs for developmentally disabled adults where recreational therapists engage participants, referred to as “consumers” in fun activities that further develop skills in socialization and daily living activities.

Who are Program Participants? Developmentally disabled adults who reside in the Bronx.


When are the Programs Held?

Tuesday & Thursday 5 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.


What do Participants Receive?
Fellowship; Social Outings; Arts and Crafts; Physical Fitness; and Dance classes.


Special Program Components:

• Bus Transportation Service
• Evening Meals
• Monthly Trips

THE BEST OF ME DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM

What is The Best of Me? A “person-centered” program designed to help developmentally disabled adults function more independently in all areas of daily life.

Who are Program Participants? Developmentally disabled adults who reside in the Bronx.


What do Participants Receive? Services include a continuum of the life skills necessary to meet the demands of adult life. The program for each consumer is individualized and based upon participant skill and performance levels.

When is the Program Held? Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

PROJECT CAREER DAY TREATMENT PROGRAM

What is Project Career? A Day Treatment Program for developmentally disabled adults with a primary diagnosis of mental retardation. The program, held at 3289 Third Avenue @ 164th Street, is designed to maximize the skill potential of participants.

Who are Program Participants? Developmentally disabled adults 21 years and older with adaptive behavior deficits who are Bronx residents.

When is the Program Held? year-round - Monday--Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

What do Participants Receive? A planned combination of diagnostic treatment and habilitation services. Program plans are developed for each individual to promote individualization, inclusion, independence and productivity.

Special Program Components:

• Round-trip transportation (to and from program);
• Daily Lunch (based upon nutritional need);
• Organized Recreational and Pre-Vocational Activities;
• Medical (semi-annual and annual reviews by clinicians);
• Routine Services (nursing, social work, and psychological counseling).
• Late afternoon recreational program, 4 days per week (for a limited number of participants whose parents have special needs).

QUALITY VENDING INC. HOME CARE PROGRAM

What is Quality Vending? A subsidiary agency of SEBNC that provides Home Attendant Services to the elderly, infirmed, mentally retarded, mentally ill homebound and physically frail clients.

Who are Program Participants? Bronx residents in Community Districts Numbers 9 and 10.

When is the Program Held? Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Answering Service is available 24 hours/7 days.

What do Participants Receive? Assistance with Personal Hygiene; Escort service to appointments and shopping errands; Light housekeeping (laundry, ironing, etc.); Meal Preparation and Companionship.

YOUTH VILLAGE FAMILY DAY CARE PROGRAM

What is Youth Village? A network of child care providers licensed by the New York City Department of Health and selected by SEBNC, who provide alternative childcare for children who may be too young for a large group day care program, or whose parents prefer a smaller setting.

Who are Program Participants? Children 6 weeks – 12 years old
Provider Parents

When is the Program Held? Monday - Friday 8 a.m.-- 6 p.m.

What do Participants Receive? Quality childcare in an affordable, safe and reliable home environment that includes age-appropriate activities which encourages the physical, cognitive, and emotional growth of children. Meals and snacks are also provided.

Providers Receive: Training, NYC Department of Health registration, along with various accreditation from child development associations. Special Program Components:

• Agency for Child Development (ACD) Vouchers accepted;
• Agency for Child Development Sliding Fee scale for working parents;
• Work Experience Participants (WEP) and low-income eligible parents – no charge;
• Breakfast, lunch, dinner and one snack for all children.

ADOLESCENT VOCATIONAL EXPLORATION (A.V.E.)

What is AVE? A two year project that provides 13-15 year old youths with the following services: vocational exploration, internship, individualized and personal career goal setting, counseling, and academic assistance. The educational treatment is composed of an enhanced version of the Experienced based Career Education curricula.

Who are the program participants?

When and where is the program held?: Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
Fridays: Academic Tutoring and Computer Technology
